The following craft has been floating around the blogosphere for years and you've probably seen it mentioned 100 times but have you actually tried it yet?
I'm talking about homemade crayons, Moms & Dads!
If your sweet angels are anything like mine, they DESTROY boxes of crayons in one fell swoop. Broken, half-dressed crayons litter the rug beneath our table and I'm left to pick up the pieces.
Those pieces swiftly go directly into an old plastic soup container (thanks Malaya!) and I save them because approximately 7.3 times per year I make homemade crayons.
Don't let the name fool you, they are just "melted crayons inside of a candy mold" ... I am not formulating my own non-toxic bubblegum scented soy wax or anything crazy.
All you do is remove the wrappers, break the crayons into 1-inch pieces, drop into a silicone mold (of any shape you desire), put into preheated 250 degree oven for 15-20 minutes (watch them just in case) and then pop silicone mold into freezer for 2 minutes. Once they are out of the freezer they spring out of the silicone with ease and you now have fun-shaped crayons.
I make these for EVERY occasion, every Birthday party and school function - mainly because we have so many broken crayons around here. Naturally, I wanted to make them for the goody bags we are handing out on Wednesday's Costume Exchange. Since I am making so many, we ran out of broken crayons and moved onto our box of crayons but it works just the same. Here's a picture of Hunter helping me remove the wrappers and then the finished product. He exclaimed throughout the process "This is so much fun, Momma! I love making crayons!"While a parental unit must do most of the work, the tedious removing-the-wrapper portion is handled with enthusiasm by little nimble fingers, hence the "Mommy & Me" description.
